“On the Horizon” is a quick glance at important news items for your week.
Star-Telegram Goes Spotlight
Sunday’s edition of the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram featured an extensively reported story chronicling hundreds of sex abuse allegations found in fundamental Baptist churches across U.S.
The story—and those of the victims—is heart-wrenching to read. This is surely not the last we will hear about massive coverups and systemic abuse in the church. I fear that this is only the beginning.
Wheaton Conference on Sexual Assault and Harassment Later This Week
On Thursday, the Billy Graham School at Wheaton College is hosting Reflections: A GC2 Summit on Responding to Sexual Harassment, Abuse, and Violence.
The goal of the event is to “address what the Bible says about this tragedy, the destruction of silence, how to protect those who are vulnerable and victimized, the role of accountability in leadership, and much more.” You can register for the livestream here.
Fire at First Baptist Bossier City
Early this morning (Monday, Dec. 10), First Baptist Bossier City, Louisiana went up in flames. Total damages as well as the cause are still uncertain, but live reports from the scene painted a grim picture of the church.
White House Opening
Saturday, President Trump announced the departure of Chief of Staff John Kelly. A successor has not been announced for the White House role, and there is much speculation over who it might be and who has turned down the opportunity.
Hall of Fame Debate
So Harold Baines, a major league outfielder most remembered for his stints with the Chicago White Sox, is now in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Boston Globe sports writer Chad Finn called Baines election to Cooperstone a “baffling move.”
