Dr. Daniel Akin
B&H Publishing Group, 2016, 384pp.
The entire “Christ-Centered Exposition” series seeks to magnify the glory of God with proper Christocentric exegesis of the text from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22. Daniel Akin, president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, delivers an excellent commentary on the book of Revelation.
Written with the pastor and sermon preparation in mind, the book is divided along the natural breaks in the Scriptures with valid points derived from the text in each section. I have seen many commentaries over the years that try their hardest to find a point that’s not there, or alliterate points from the text at all cost. Akin allows the text to speak for itself with the voice of God.
At the end of each chapter there is a “Reflect and Discuss” section that provides opportunity for personal reflection as well as small group discussion material. The questions are both insightful and challenging for the reader. Given the difficulty of the book of Revelation Akin does a fantastic job interpreting and explaining the text in such a way that is accessible to any reader. One helpful aspect of the book is the use of illustrations throughout. The illustrations are helpful for the reader who seeks to learn, and the pastor preparing their sermon. Throughout the book the reader will also notice the practicality as Akin does an excellent job applying the text to today’s church.
Benefit for Pastoral Ministry
As most pastors and ministers know the book of Revelation is one of the most avoided texts in the Bible, and possibly the most avoided in the New Testament. It can be challenging to exegete. Akin provides the pastor with a fantastic tool to help with the exegesis and exposition of the text. Although this is not considered an academic work, Akin has approached this with the writing of a scholar and the heart of a pastor, essentially preaching the to pastors.
It would greatly benefit pastors who struggle interpreting the book of Revelation since it remains a popular study in the church. Having such an accessible commentary on the book will provide great insight to anyone seeking to be ready to answer questions about Revelation when asked. Pastor, do you and your church a favor by adding this commentary to your shelf.
