One thing I have intentionally sought to do through my personal blog over the past few years is connect with pastors. I have seen the readership grow, friendships develop, and a community birthed out of the blog.
But there are only so many topics and so much content my personal blog can cover. That leads us to the launch of this site specifically for pastors.
Pastors Today has actually existed in email newsletter form (and will continue to do so) a few years now. But today we launch a fully-developed website specifically for pastors. Our aim for the expanded Pastors Today website is fourfold:
- We want to express love for pastors. I am so thankful for those of you who are called to shepherd local expressions of the church. There is no higher calling within the local church than that of the pastor. I love my pastor, and it is my prayer that each of you knows how much your church members love you. Church members may not always be the best at expressing it, but I pray that you also find a loving community for pastors here on this site.
- We want to encourage pastors. This point is related to the first, but deserves its own explanation. Being a pastor is not easy. While the work can often be incredibly rewarding, it is often just as stressful. Pastors have more than their fair share of critics both inside and outside of the church. That’s why we want to use this website to encourage—as well as equip—pastors. And it’s not just the contributors who should be doing the encouraging. I want to challenge each reader to use this site to encourage your fellow pastors. We are co-laborers for the Lord, not competitors.
- We want to inform pastors. Pastors often ask me basic “how-to” questions related to pastoral ministry. I wish I could answer every question in the greatest of detail, but that is simply not possible. So when we sought out contributors for the site, we lined up some of the best and brightest. They offer decades of combined pastoral experience and expertise. The topics covered here will be specific to pastors and pastoral ministry. While we might occasionally dig into theological discussions, the bulk of the topics covered here will be related to practical ministry applications for pastors.
- We want to resource pastors. As we inform, we will also provide resources for pastors. These resources may be in the form of book reviews and excerpts or videos or free downloads. But they will always be for pastors. The resources we choose to review or discuss here on the site will be specific to pastors. There won’t be any fluff aimed at selling or promoting products to fit in some marketing plan a publisher has. That’s my promise to you. The purpose of this site is not to pitch new products. The purpose is to strengthen pastors and their churches with biblical resources for life.
Some of you may be wondering why we are taking on this endeavor. Well, there are around 400,000 churches in America alone. Logically, there are nearly 400,000 pastors as well. Those pastors have made it clear to me—and to the team at LifeWay—that they want a place online specifically for pastors that provides reliable content and a supportive community. So our goal for Pastors Today is to meet that need.
I’m excited at the potential of this new site and the small part it will play in the furthering of the Kingdom.
